Thank you IATEFL!

This time, I would like to invite all English teachers and teacher trainers to participate in our GELI Conference that will take place in Cuba this year.

If you are interested in coming, please let me know using these emails. nayyor@infomed.sld.cu or yordankavalle@googlemail.com

I am sending the details now!
Looking forward to see you in Cuba.

ALC-GELI 20th Annual Convention
December 17-20, 2011

Havana - Cuba

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

The 20th Annual ALC-GELI Convention offers ELT professionals exciting and productive opportunities for professional development.

Sessions at the Convention will include:

Canadian Studies SIG Open Forum - Papers - Workshops – Posters – Research-
Plenaries by Cuban and foreign specialists
Submissions are welcomed from teachers, teacher trainers, researchers, program administrators, and material and curriculum developers.

Types of sessions

a) SIG Open Forum. The SIG Open Forum of Canadian Studies, brings together speakers and audience with a common
interest. Ideas will be presented and there will be opportunities for interactive discussions. The open forum will be led by
a convener and will include a minimum of four other presenters. Although its length will vary according to its own
features, the open forum normally runs for two hours.

b) Paper (15 minutes). A paper is most effectively presented as an oral summary with occasional reference to notes or a text. It describes and discusses something that the presenter is doing, or has done in relation to either theory or practice. The presenter often provides handouts and may also use audiovisual aids.

c) Workshop (45 minutes). A workshop should include very little lecturing by the leader, the emphasis is on the participants’ activity, which is carefully structured by the leader. The leader works with the participants, helping them solve a problem or develop a specific teaching or research technique.

c) Poster Session (1 hour). A poster session allows for individual discussion with participants during the time that a self-explanatory exhibit is on display. The exhibit is presented on a large display board: 4’ x 8; it includes a title, the name and institutional affiliation of the presenter(s), and a brief text with clearly labeled photos, drawings, graphs, or charts.

d) Research (20 min.). Research presentation normally describes and examines in more detail the presenter’s findings
resulting from the careful study of ELT-related issues and concerns involving either small-scale investigative projects in
the classroom (action research) or long-term research.

e) Plenary (1 hour). There will be plenary sessions given by Cuban and foreign specialists on topics of general interest.
Plenary speakers and topics will be selected by the Organizing Committee from among proposals received.

What are the steps in submitting a proposal?

These instructions should be read carefully so that the Presenter’s Proposal Form will not be disqualified:

There must be no more than two presenters for each proposal. Use the same Presenter’s Proposal Form for both.

One requirement for acceptance of the proposal is to provide an abstract that will appear in the Academic Programme if the proposal is accepted. The abstract helps convention participants decide which presentation will be the most appropriate for their concerns and needs. It should not exceed 150 words and must be written in English.

What disqualifies a proposal?

1.The Presenter’s Proposal Form is not completed according to the guidelines outlined in this Call for Participation.
2.The Presenter’s Proposal Form is not accompanied by the abstract.
3.The abstract exceeds 150 words.
4.The Presenter’s Proposal Form is not received at ALC Central Office by the deadline of November 12, 2011.
5.The proposal has more than two presenters.

REGISTRATION

All participants will have to fill in the Individual Registration Form, whether they submit a paper to be presented at the convention or not; thus, presenters will have to submit both the Individual Registration Form and the Presenter’s Proposal Form as well.

Please, notice that the deadlines for the submission of the forms are different.
